What Is SAM.gov, and How Does It Fit Into Contracting?
SAM.gov — the System for Award Management — is the U.S. government's official, free website for registering to do business with the federal government and for finding federal contract opportunities. If you want to win federal work, your journey starts here.
What SAM.gov actually does
SAM.gov serves two core jobs. First, it's where your business registers as an official federal vendor — without an active registration, an agency legally cannot award you a federal contract. Second, it's the public board where federal agencies post contract opportunities (solicitations), replacing the old FedBizOpps / FBO.gov.
- Register your entity to become eligible for federal awards
- Get and manage your UEI (Unique Entity ID)
- Search and track federal solicitations and contract notices
- Maintain reps & certs (representations and certifications)
The UEI and why it matters
When you register, SAM.gov assigns your business a Unique Entity ID (UEI) — a 12-character identifier that replaced the old DUNS number in 2022. The UEI is how the government tracks your entity across systems. You'll also want a CAGE code (Commercial and Government Entity code), which SAM.gov requests for you during registration.
Where SAM.gov fits in the workflow
Think of federal bidding as a pipeline: register on SAM.gov → find an opportunity → decide to bid → prepare your proposal → submit → manage the award. SAM.gov covers the first two stages. But it's deliberately bare-bones: there's no pipeline tracking, no proposal help, and it only covers federal work — not the state, county, city, and private RFPs where many small businesses actually win first.
SAM.gov is the start, not the whole game
Plenty of contractors register on SAM.gov, run a few manual searches, get overwhelmed, and stall. The platform finds federal opportunities but won't help you qualify them, organize a pipeline, or write a winning proposal. That's the gap BidCommand fills — unifying federal and non-federal discovery, pipeline management, and proposal drafting in one place.
Frequently asked questions
Is SAM.gov free?+
Yes. Registration and opportunity search on SAM.gov are completely free. Be wary of third-party sites that charge to 'register' you — the official site is sam.gov and it costs nothing.
How long does SAM.gov registration take?+
Entity validation and registration typically take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on how cleanly your business information validates. Start early — you can't receive a federal award until it's active.
Do I need SAM.gov for state or local contracts?+
Not usually. State, county, and city governments run their own vendor registration portals. SAM.gov is specifically for federal contracting, though many states reference similar codes (like NAICS).
Find federal opportunities without the SAM.gov grind
BidCommand brings federal solicitations into one feed alongside state and local bids, then helps you track and respond to them.
